As 2007 ends and 2008 begins, it can feel like people are purposely being UNfriendly. Competition and comparisons can be extreme and unhealthy, and can dash hopes and dreams. As Mars and Pluto oppose on New Year’s the effects of this transit can be more intense if your primary connection is to your ego. This is a test of the strength of your ego’s hold over your behavior, beliefs, and life.
And what do the competitive people want? They want you to feel the full intensity of how bad things are and how awful you should feel.
The aspects that start 2008 show that we are all at a crucial decision point. But— will we choose to feel better, or worse? This starts with a personal choice. You can’t be depressed or negative enough to satisfy the most competitive negative person. And when you stop and think, trying can start to seem rather absurd. You can choose to laugh, be light, stop worrying and be happy!
But… how can you be happy when someone just made an error??!! There was a mistake!! Someone did something WRONG! If you chose to ramp up the energy and put out angry vibes, you just escalated the bad feelings. Of course, none of us need to accept the angry vibes being sent our way, but most of us feel them and need to ground them, or we will feel bad and continue to pass it on. The original need to point blame at error is your ego speaking. Listening to it may seem to empower you, after all, you’re right! But it also closes off your access to your inner intuition, which needs QUIET for its message to be heard.
At New Year’s, the Sun was recently trine Saturn and conjunct Pluto and Jupiter [which also means Jupiter and Pluto are conjunct and Jupiter and Saturn are trine]; when you focus on your goals now, you empower them. You can feel positive and confident, especially if you’re following the rules and doing all the right things. It’s encouraging to watch your goals build and manifest into a successful life, even if you have to be patient with small successes at first. It’s time to follow in the traditions of your teachers and carve your own legacy.
And the path to success means focusing on what you DO want to achieve, and consciously blocking out the negative doubts. It’s a conscious decision– whether to focus on the negative or positive, and it will take practice to make it feel natural. As 2008 begins, being sincerely grateful for progress, no matter how big or small, is the fastest path to feeling good.
The catch is, that when you are certain you have found THE next big thing, you need to distinguish between impulse and a really good idea. Taking a short cut may not get you to your destination any faster, and may even slow you down. The point may not be to get there faster, but to get there while being in control of your emotions and therefore your decisions. Instead of making decisions that benefit your ego, make balanced decisions that include your heart, body, and soul as well as your mind.

The Full Moon is Sunday, December 23, 2007 at 8:19 pm est; 5:18 pm pst
Full Moons occur when the Sun and Moon oppose.
The Full Moon is in Cancer, opposing the Sun in Capricorn.
[Moon at 1 Cancer 50; Sun at 1 Capricorn 50]
It is in the very beginning of CARDINAL signs. This FULL MOON is time to take initiative– in a practical, responsible way.
At the light of this Full Moon, you can see clearly how reacting emotionally or taking things personally can cloud your judgment, make you feel defensive and lose energy. While going with the flow can bring positive rewards in the near future as your energy catches up with your growing to-do list.
Best wishes for a WONDERfilled Solstice,
Lauren
‘Tis the season.
Everyone is out getting ready for the holidays, buying, making, and wrapping gifts and food. It’s fun and exciting.
Today, December 18th, the Nodes are changing signs, and Jupiter is moving from Sagittarius to Capricorn.
I really enjoyed giving through my writing. And I sincerely hope it has helped.
Wishing you all a warm and happy 2008!

Shhhh. It’s the darkest time of year and the children are sleeping, dreaming of presents and play.
At Winter Solstice, the Sun is at its most Northern declination (the Tropic of Cancer), making the nights longer and the days very short. More darkness sets the mood to ponder the great mysteries of life. As we celebrate Christmas, the coming of the child savior, we celebrate the return of Light.
When the Sun reaches its Northern point at Winter Solstice,it seems to hang motionless for 12 days, before starting to move South once again. This simple act is always AWEsome and needs to be remembered and celebrated for the miracle it is. Sure, it “happens like clockwork”. That’s the point. The precision of the orbit is the miracle and mystery.
And as we end one year and begin another, we are reminded of the passing of time. What have you done with your year? Are you just “writing off” another bad year and not making any plans to make this one any different? If so, you may also be feeling frustrated with your (lack of) progress. Have you achieved your goals? Are you living your dreams? If your plan is to drift into 2008 and “see what happens”, you may have another year to “write off”. And as you see, the years are passing.
And that’s the magic of the New Year. We can get excited about life all over again! We get another chance to regenerate and start new. We can wake up to the wonder of life. And we can set new goals that challenge us to go further than we’ve ever gone before.
To feel the miracle of the New Year, you only need to quiet your mind and open your heart to all the appreciation you feel inside.

This is an amazing week coming up! There is so much happening, astrologically and otherwise, starting on Monday, December 17. So let’s start with the Sun. The Sun is conjunct Mercury in the late degrees of Sagittarius on Monday (December 17). This means Mercury is at the midpoint of its current Direct period. When the Sun and Mercury are exactly conjunct, your ability to THINK may feel overshadowed as the rays of the Sun make it too bright to see or think clearly.
The Sun and Mercury will conjunct Pluto (Wednesday and Thursday) and then Jupiter (the Sun-Jupiter will happen right after the Sun enters Capricorn). The Sun and Mercury passing by Pluto and Jupiter can help you to focus on what you truly desire — and provide you with the power of persuasion to get it. You may be able to use your words to help others understand your intentions and help you reach a BIG goal.
The Sun enters Capricorn, marking the WINTER SOLSTICE on Saturday, December 22, 1:08 am est, and Friday December 21, 9:56 pm pst. More on this in another post…
Jupiter enters Capricorn on Tuesday, putting more focus on working smarter. You must have a PLAN to succeed this year. A good teacher, life coach, mentor is vital to keep yourself encouraged AND on course. If you’re not willing to make a commitment, even if it costs, you will continue to struggle to climb up the ladder of success, whatever your profession-of-choice.
A commitment is vital. As Jupiter enters Capricorn, Saturn, ruler of Capricorn, is stationing Retrograde (December 19). This gives you the winter to re-think career goals and get your fine-tune your plan. What IS realistic? What real steps can you take to improve your professional expertise? You may want to focus your education on professional advancement. There IS a way– if you’re willing to do the work that follows the commitment. It’s very helpful to do something you enjoy, because you’ll be spending plenty of your time doing it.
The Nodes are changing sign, moving from Pisces into Aquarius. Over the next year and a half, feeling personal pride may not be as important as the nature of the work you do and the lives you touch. Status that comes through possessing expensive things may not continue to assure influence and high ranking. The North Node in Aquarius is statistically the lowest point in the economic cycle (Leo being the highest, the last time the North Node was in Leo was 1999). But money may not be the focus of your goals right now. It may be learning more to share with others. Instead of feeling you have to be THE star or better than anyone else, being a functioning PART of the group can be more fulfilling for the next few years. No ONE person can be or do it all, but together we can gain more pride and self-respect.

Tompkins Square (and St Brigid) at Christmas, with snow
c 2006 by Lauren Edmond
Tompkins Square Park is in the East Village of NYC, where I have lived for the past 30 years. St Brigid’s Church is endangered and the Committee to Save St Brigid has staved off the wrecking ball,,, still! I have donated about 20 paintings to the cause and I will happily mak another donation more when I sell any painting of St Brigid from my website. Yes, this is the Church Matt Dillon is involved in protecting. He has been at many of the benefits.
