Saturn is opposing Uranus.
Today.
It’s big news. But it’s not all Saturn is doing right now.
Saturn is opposing Uranus, quincunx Neptune, conjunct the Sun, approaching a conjunction with Retrograde Mercury, and approaching a square to Pluto– exact on November 15, only 2 months from now.
This week (September 14 – 20), Saturn will be joined by the Sun while they both oppose Uranus. While we have to carry on our personal responsibilities, we are also being called on to be more socially aware, and ultimately, socially responsible. This is not an easy change! We have not been conditioned to do this. Yet, our whole inner psychology is changing, slowly. We value independence, we value independent thinkers, we value freedom. We are afraid of restrictions. Yet, it is our limits that define us, that give us a place to become fully ourselves. That give us the guidelines to grow, to build, to become responsible to our goals.
Saturn, the last visible planet representing social order, is making aspects to all 3 outer planets, while conjunct Mercury, the messenger. We need to become social responsible. Instead of hating, we need to respond.
That may seem natural to some, yet the concept may be an alien idea to many others.
So why should we bother to recycle, take our garbage to centers instead of throwing it anywhere we feel like it? Care about problems like global warming? Why should we pay for some other person we don’t even know? Why should we fund “projects” that help the poor, or disadvantaged children, or those who can’t afford health care? Because we live in a society. You can choose to live off the grid. But you have to buy your land, farm your food, make your power, not use the roads or the hospitals, not use any product manufactured by “the system”, and pray that you never need military backup. And of course no schools or fire departments, police. But you’re in control. Or the strongest person in your neighborhood is! Or, we can choose to live in a society of equals.
These aspects will demand that we become more clear about our beliefs. A sketchy idea may be pure illusion. Keep in mind that Saturn is also quincunx Neptune, things are not the way they seem and beliefs can be based on these unclear perceptions.
And– Saturn is approaching a square to Pluto, hastened and announced by Mercury moving between Saturn and Pluto as it makes its current Retrograde station, we are ripe for manipulation unless we take another look.
Saturn opposes Uranus September 15, 2009 from StarLight Solutions:
“New ideas, changes, innovations, or expressions of personal creative eccentricities are met with entrenched resistance, fearful authoritarian conservatism, or bureaucratic hindrances and delays. Unruly behavior, impulsive spontaneous expression, or experimenting with new forms may well be seen as threats to tradition and to the status quo. These two forces collide, generating considerable tension and frustration within you. This may lead to radical departures from your existing life, a revolt that no one, including you, saw coming. Freedom versus security or commitment, idealism versus practicality, individual rights versus responsibilities to others, dancing to the beat of a different drummer versus conforming to societal expectations, growing up versus remaining an adolescent, staying put versus breaking free are some of the themes being played out in your world now.
Positive Potentials:
Grounding. Giving form and definition, structure and commitment to one’s inspiration, abstract ideals, and personal genius. Integrating the opposing forces, finding value in both.
Negative Potentials:
Discordant and confrontational attitudes which only serve to separate and polarize both parties. Stress-related conditions are aggravated. Disruptions of personal security. Accidents as an expression of inner frustration.
Remedies and Suggestions:
Blame, resentment, or polarizing against either of the sides will only intensify the distress. If you feel you must sever ties with an oppressor or extremely restrictive situation, try to do so with some grace and courtesy. By making the other a villain and yourself the victim, you set yourself up to meet the same problem again a little further down the road.
See where you can incorporate freshness and experimentation into your old patterns, and where you can apply discipline or learn from a tradition in your creative life. Try to honor both sides.
Therapeutic massages, bodywork, or a regular yoga practice can be very helpful now.”
This interpretation emphasizes the need to honor both sides, a very Saturnian theme, as Saturn asks us to both love and respect each other by honoring the rules of society. And Uranus, opposing, asks that those rules are fair and equitable to all. Yet Uranus also wants freedom and listening to the details of the rules, especially since Saturn is in detail-oriented Virgo, gets tedious. Uranus wants change NOW! And since the Sun and Saturn are opposing Uranus, the urge for freedom can create enough pressure to — explode! No more waiting, things have to happen NOW, nevermind what the authorities say. This is a maverick aspect. This feeling of having to strike out on your own is very real.
But, since Uranus is opposing responsible Saturn, we are also being called on to express our independence in constructive ways. Smashing everything we’re against may not lead to any lasting change, but can destroy many lives. More karmic baggage, symbolized by the Mercury-Pluto square that will return again this fall. Underlying any hostility we can be feeling about “the other side” is a feeling of not being welcome, not being included in the group, being outcast, judged, and invalidated. Instantly stereotyped.
Ironically during this opposition, we can start to realize that we may be on one side in one situation, and on another in a different situation. In some cases you may be an integral part of the group, yet in other parts of your life, you may feel like an outsider. It’s not all one way or the other. Yet, regardless of which side we are on, if we allow our group status to make it seem acceptable to hurt others, we are sacrificing more than we realize– we are giving all our personal freedom to the group. Whatever the group says is the right thing to do, think, like, dislike, wear– whatever they say is exactly what we will do to fit in. Yet, though we may fit in, we are no longer the independent individual we used to be. We may have power in numbers, but alone, we still need to know ourselves. And since Mercury is also square Pluto, if you don’t know your own mind, you are ripe for manipulation by persuasive thinkers and speakers.
How can you be less complacent and more accepting, even within your own group?
Are you free when you have to wear and say exactly what everyone else is wearing and saying? What do you do to be accepted? No judgments! Just notice.
If you embrace intolerance, how clear is your thinking if all you can do is think of more ways to hate, fear, distrust.
Since Mercury is Retrograde, thinking is going to turn around. Information is going to light that changes minds. One thing we are going to realize is that people who are fueling hatred are making a lot of $$$ doing it!
Perhaps after the New Moon– when the Sun and Moon join Saturn in opposing Uranus– we will see our resistance to change in more personal ways. While it may be time to push past limits, the resistance we feel may be within each of us.
Whether or not we (always) feel validated by the group, it’s still our personal responsibility to value ourselves. We can choose to focus on opportunities, or on negative judgments. If we can accept that we all need guidance and leadership at times, we can release our judgments– on ourselves– and start to find more balance, within and without.

Lauren
