This New Moon is a Total Solar Eclipse, where the Sun and Moon are conjunct, and also conjunct the Lunar Node.

In this Solar Eclipse, the Sun and Moon are conjunct in Cancer (at 19 Cancer 24) with the South Node (at 11 Cancer 58). The Moon in Cancer is in its rulership position (the Moon rules Cancer), and is thereby the final dispositor of the chart, which means the Sun in Cancer defers to the Moon.

Since the Solar Eclipse is only making a sextile to Mars (hot enough?), surfing around on the internet a week after writing this blog, I learned that Western astrologers don’t see this Eclipse as very significant, though Vedic astrologers do. They are just not considering Ceres, the great mother asteroid, which is how the great mother archetype is “normally” treated. The New Moon/Eclipse is making an inconjunct aspect to Ceres, the mother goddess asteroid, recently promoted to “dwarf planet.” Ceres inconjunct (quincunx) both Sun and Moon at Eclipse time bears our attention. Ceres is also square Mars in Virgo with ruler Mercury in Sun-ruled Leo. This is about the parched Earth and how we’re going to heal it. Because we are going to heal it and this Eclipse contains information about how to proceed with the healing process.

The way we feel about the Earth and the way we feel about ourselves is not aligned. Most of us get our sense of self from how we interact with people and what we do. We are busy! And that’s who we are. That’s our lifestyle. And while we feel for the Earth and all the plants and animals, we need to keep up our lifestyles. And we do! Yet the world is having a tough time keeping up with our lifestyles. It’s at a boiling point as Ceres squares Mars. New trends are going to have to include changing the way we work and play. Or the Earth will enforce it. Nature is nature because it does its own thing, regardless of what is decreed by any human. We can shout at the rain or holler at the heat, yet it will rain or be hot. There is also a part within all of us that is natural, like a stream running through us. We access this part at times, and take it seriously when we’re in trouble. Animals feel this and obey it instinctually. Yet this nature, this stream running through us all, has the power to change our course and to heal. In astrology, nature, the unconscious, is represented the Moon in the chart. The Moon rules the sign of Cancer.

Through these Cancer Solar Eclipse aspects between the ruling Moon and Ceres, you may become inspired to be more active in doing something for the environment. Seeing the loss of the life due to environmental crisis is extending our feeling of family. As we all share the feeling of loss, we see possibilities for greater circles of relationships.

This is a SOLAR ECLIPSE, which means what is usually hidden by the New Moon is made apparent. What was unconscious becomes conscious. And since this Eclipse is tied to Great Mother Ceres, we get to see another side of the Mother, which may not be the warm apple-pie image we like to have of Mother. The other side, the dark side, is revealed at the Eclipse in Cancer. This doesn’t mean every woman is going to freak out. It means the inner self is revealed, both light and dark. We think whatever we are not conscious aware of is dark and therefore evil or bad. It only means, however, that we are not accepting that part of the archetype. We can only accept the nurturing caring Mother archetype, yet not the “witch” so the dark side takes over. The Sun is too hot, and the Earth is scorched.

Instead of instantly rushing to the point of negative judgment, what if this is just a call for the hidden, buried parts of ourselves to come to the surface and be seen. By hiding them, we make them strange, rancid, poisonous, and scary. Yet we are taught that exposing them is only going to make things worse. And it will, until we are ready to sacrifice what is infantile within. Wherever the Eclipse occurs in your chart is where making this sacrifice will help your growth. The objective is not to become old and boring, but to become responsible and therefore able to be child-like and play, have fun, live and love.

What is hidden in the Eclipsed parts of your Self?

The Solar Eclipse makes an exact aspect to Mars in Virgo while Mercury, ruler of Virgo is in hot Leo. This aspect can generate lots of energy, including more hot weather to come!

This Solar Eclipse is also conjunct the Fixed Stars of Castor and Pollux, the twins of Leda. In the myth. They also had 2 sisters, Clytemnestra and Helen (of Troy). Castor was mortal, Pollux was immortal. Castor was killed in a battle, leaving Pollux alone. Neither could stand the separation. A bargain was made that allowed Pollux to live with Castor in Hades (the underworld) half the time, and on Mount Olympus the rest of the time. This worked for awhile, but like all halfway agreements, it was more frustrating than fulfilling, so Zeus made them into the stars of Castor and Pollux where they continue to shine (in the constellation of Gemini, which is 19 degrees Cancer in Tropical Astrology). What kind of balance can you create where there is conflict and frustration?

Solar Eclipse. January 15, 2010

Eclipses generally come in pairs. Lunar and Solar.

Lunar Eclipses (December 31) occur with FULL Moons.

Solar Eclipses occur with NEW Moons.

During New Moons, you CAN’T see the Moon. But during a Solar Eclipse, the invisible Moon becomes visible as we see its shadow move across the SUN. The invisible becomes visible. The subconscious becomes conscious.

The Solar Eclipse of January 15 2010 is not an easy chart. I know. Ugh. And what a drag astrology can be! While numerologists and tarot readers are predicting a fabulous 2010, astrologers are not joining in. I know. Who wants to hear bad news? Not many of us! Yet, life does have its ups and downs, and if no one warns you about that last missing step,,,,,, And if things do get challenging, isn’t it better to know that was a possibility than to think it’s all your fault and you’re losing your mind? Having a full size vision of your life also helps you make better choices and achieve more understanding. And while no one likes a cry baby, no one likes an arrogant stuck-up person either! We The People did not appreciate being told we were going on a “cakewalk” that turned into a brutal war. This Eclipse CAN be a great experience– if YOU embrace change! Not just tolerate it. But welcome it. Be not only willing but excited to give up your comforts for the unknown.

Eclipses symbolize a change in consciousness. We walk through a doorway. And while that can be exciting, we also realize that we are LEAVING something behind. And that can be an adjustment on many levels.

Change can be exciting, or change can be scary. Change changes! In some parts of our lives, we may welcome change. In others, we may dread it and hold it back with all our energy.

For many years I’ve been making change for change! That needs to change!

A few hours after the Solar Eclipse, Mercury will make a Direct Station. At this time, when Mercury hangs in the sky motionless, it will be conjunct Pluto and square Saturn. Nevermind anything as flimsy as New Year’s Resolutions! This is about making SOLID commitments that you are willing to work hard to maintain, even under a stress test. There is relief! Mercury stops just a degree from all this being exact. So there is some room, but it’s close enough to get the message.

The Mercury-Saturn square repeats (it frames this Mercury Rx station), which can feel like you can just never get what you need, somehow, it will be denied. Things are moving, but in VERY SLOW MOTION….

Yet, Mercury square Saturn again– while conjunct Pluto in early Capricorn– suggests that if you select carefully, you can focus on what is most important. There is also a connection between Saturn, ruler of Capricorn, squaring Mercury and Pluto in Capricorn. You can achieve your goals, but you will need to be practical and focused. And good at what you do!

To make a serious, ongoing commitment to ONE thing or person, you have to limit other areas of life. You don’t HAVE TO make a commitment, you can just sort of flow unconsciously through life, see what happens…. But the problem with that strategy is that you don’t build anything. Nothing is developed. Everything remains on a superficial level. If you are not willing to LEARN the lessons of Saturn, you are not evading some grim fate, you are missing the point, the teaching, the kernel of truth.

But as 2010 begins, some of us are in an angry state of mind. Mars is Retrograde in Leo, our egos are going through CHANGES!!! We don’t WANT TO grow up!!! Some of us will even have emotional tantrums on TV, and others will watch and support this! Many of us are afraid of an uncertain future. We only want to hear GOOD things. Yet, if we really didn’t want anything but GOOD NEWS, why were We, The People, so upset when the “cakewalk” we were promised turned into a fierce ongoing battle? Why do we tolerate certain news programs broadcasting negative emotional displays? We don’t like negative surprises. Yet, when astrology suggests it can turn on a light, we run for cover!

The square from Saturn to Pluto is a teaching of GROWING UP. We don’t want to. We insist others take care of us, at no cost to us. Yet, this demand keeps us in the child zone. That’s ok too, we all grow at our own pace. Right now, the pace is slow motion.

Many of us will feel and use this energy defensively. We will deny others, make unrealistic accusations, and say negative things to attempt to control situations and manipulate through force or threat to get what we want. Yet, we can find ourselves digging a continuously deeper and deeper hole, as we continue to blame others for things beyond their control or not anyone’s “fault”. If this finding fault and blaming are our first line of defense, we may experience the winter of 2010 as extremely challenging.

Another important astrological event occurring with the New Moon-Solar Eclipse is JUPITER’s ingress into Pisces. This is a VERY brief visit! Jupiter usually spends a year in a sign, but is only spending months in PIsces before moving on to Aries– and more about this all over the astrological internet as this transit adds to the Cardinal T-Square, which will be a Grand Cardinal Cross at Summer solstice.

So while we are still complaining and blaming, and before all H*LL breaks lose this summer, we have a few months to find our compassion for more than just our selves.

Eclipse: Following-up and Moving on!

Filed under: astrology, eclipse, lunar eclipse — Lauren Edmond @ 11:58 am

The Full Moon was beautiful. I was lucky enough to see it, in person! I drove a short way to a big sky view. Took the dogs and some treats for that summer drive-in movie experience. The clouds made it very dramatic.

lunar eclipse over the mountain view

Yet, although I had studied the Full Moon chart for hours, days, weeks, what I did not realize until I actually looked at the Full Moon, was the proximity of Jupiter. Yup, that was Jupiter to the left (east) of the Moon, as the Moon was approaching Jupiter (also in Aquarius) at the time of the Full Moon (the exact Moon-Jupiter conjunction was the next afternoon, August 6).

In the hours and days after the Eclipse, the Jupiter-effect took hold. Optimism was in the air. Yes, there are major stumbling blocks to progress, symbolized by Mars square Saturn (exact Monday, August 10), but we felt the clarity and vision to do anything. But this is no ordinary Mars-Saturn square (they never are!) as Mars highlights and focuses the ongoing and upcoming Saturn-Uranus opposition (exact again on September 15). We can see our resistance to change. Life can seem at a standstill, progress can stop, inertia can set in. Yet, as we realize that our resistance comes from fear, even our resistance can change! Mars also trines Jupiter this week, and if we stay positive, we can find our energy and use it for our greatest benefit instead of using it to deny, negate, and foil our best interests.

The Lunar Eclipse in Aquarius was about focusing our energy so we can use it positively and productively. We learned the value of meditation to still our minds so we can see a clear reflection. We found that by achieving inner peace, we could find original, innovative, uplifting answers to frustrating questions. We learned how creative and powerful our thoughts can be, as they instantly integrate into the culture. We knew this, but we experienced it and knew it again through the Eclipse, in a new way.

Post-eclipse, the work continues. Mars squares Saturn and then goes on to trine Jupiter and Neptune, also Chiron. The challenge of keeping an open mind increases. Mars-Saturn can make our fears seem more real while it tests our patience and beliefs. Authority figures can push us to or even past our limits, possibly increasing tension, frustration, and disagreements. They can discount and devalue self-worth, forcing us to do things that are against our best interests, including work for less pay and less recognition. This can be an ongoing dilemma that challenges the entire economy over the next year and a half as Saturn and Uranus oppose. (see the end of this article for a Saturn-Uranus timeline)

Yet, as Mars moves on to trine Jupiter, Neptune, and Chiron (Aug 13-17), we can start to see the value of keeping an open mind, and even extend that courtesy to ourselves, despite what we are led to believe about our personal value. We see that we need to maintain balance so we are not frozen by our fears, failures, and losses — or overwhelmed by our potential. We are learning to integrate our spiritual selves with our material needs.

We may feel tested and strained (by the Mars-Saturn square), yet the patience we have found through reflecting on the Lunar Eclipse can help us craft (Mars in Gemini) our frustrations into real accomplishments (Saturn in Virgo).

To be open-minded is to accept the uniqueness of all individuals. Instead of trying to control their thoughts, being open to the differences. Instead of trying to limit, cut off, condemn, inhibit, shame, suppress, and/or withhold, finding interest in our differences. Being ready and able to learn, in other words, having an open mind! Even and especially for our own inconsistencies.

While there may be lessons and setbacks, you can continue to use the lessons of the Eclipse to become more focused and disciplined. And as you cut through the self-doubt and inhibitions, you can reclaim your energy and accomplish more. You can see the value of staying positive, magnified as Mars trines Jupiter, Chiron, and Neptune. If you’re balanced, you can even get lucky! You don’t have to see yourself as The Best Ever– and you don’t have to see yourself as a constant failure. But you can increase your consciousness. You can choose to allow your natural self-confidence to make you feel enthusiastic, and graduate to the next level.

The Eclipse in Aquarius also taught us the value of detachment. While detachment may seem cold, it is by detaching from the ego’s attachment that we align with our intuition.

To further integrate the oppositions of the Aquarius Full Moon, here are some questions you can ask yourself for meditation and reflection. You may want to meditate on these questions, or write about them in your journal, or just let your mind mull them over….

In what ways are you inflexible? How do you hold on to structures, even though you know the foundation is not strong enough to build and sustain your hopes and dreams?

Where have you noticed that you are not open-minded? And how can you be more open to new resources and ideas? Without feeling overwhelmed by them!

How can you take control of yourself by redirecting your energy or focus? This can be done more easily with this week’s Mars aspects.

How can you participate more to raise consciousness and awareness?

Are you ready to let go of more shame so you can reclaim your energy?

How can you release your ego’s hold and be more open to your higher guidance?

How can you open yourself to all the good things you deserve and would like to receive?

Saturn-Uranus oppositions
The first Saturn-Uranus opposition in Virgo-Pisces was November 4, 2008
The next was February 5, 2009
The next upcoming is September 15.
Saturn will enter Libra (Oct 29)
Then both Saturn and Uranus station Retrograde
There’s another opposition at 28 Virgo-Pisces on April 26, 2010
Uranus will enter Aries (May 2010)
And they will oppose in the Cardinal signs of Aries-Libra on July 26, 2010
After that, Saturn will continue to move into Libra, while Uranus spends a little more time Retrograde in Pisces
(Uranus stations Retrograde on July 5, 2010 and moves back into late Pisces and enter Aries again on August 13, 2010)
