Mars enters Libra on July 29 and joins Saturn on July 31.
This means that Mars is now officially part of the Cardinal T-Square.
Next weekend, Venus will enter Libra and join the T-Square.
See ArtCharts Daily AstroBlog for exact times and links to interpretations.
This is literally not the time to push your luck. Consider that alll delays are divine!
Mars and Saturn conjunct at Libra 00’49″, called “the Aries point” or the initiator. There is driving force to get things moving. So to see what we will be putting more energy into initiating, we look at Venus, the ruler of Libra, for clues and insights.
Venus is at the end of Virgo, and as mentioned in an earlier post about Venus, she is not making any inter-planetary aspects. In fact, as Mars and Saturn conjunct, Venus is void of course, and won’t make another major aspect until entering Libra, when Venus conjuncts Saturn.
By nature, Mars is not at home in Libra. Mars is strong, masculine energy, the kind of energy it takes to get things done. Libra is Venus-ruled, socially-oriented and cooperative, unlike the me-first style of Mars.
Mars is also conjunct Saturn, holding its energy back until it is disciplined enough to be socially acceptable. It’s not ok to have a freak fit, unless you want to go down in history (Saturn rules history) as a combatant. This is a time for more awareness of energy use, personally and socially.
While we can find more discipline while Mars and Saturn are together, we can also feel under considerable pressure. Mars now joins the ongoing Cardinal T-Square, forming a square to Pluto and an opposition to Uranus-Jupiter. Mars may want to rush to battle, but social pressure can temper even the most frustrated temper. You may want to attack whoever crosses your path, especially if, according to society, it’s ok to judge them. Yet, you can be too energized to simply sit back and judge everyone make a mess of things; this can be the time to roll up your sleeves and do whatever needs to be done, whatever the cost. This is a good time to remember the distinction between courage and force; spontaneity and impulsiveness.
You’ve got the energy– put it to good use!
Here’s a related story on yoga from last weekend’s NYTimes Magazine: “The Yoga Mogul”
Here’s an astrology chart for the Mars-Saturn conjunction:

mars conjuncts saturn
To truly understand this aspect and get past its potential for frustation, we need to look at Saturn in Libra. This is the “exalted” position in astrology for Saturn. Saturn cares about social systems, and that’s a good match for socially-minded Libra. Saturn, which is outside the Earth’s orbit, is more universal than Venus, which is inside Earth’s orbit and therefore considered a personal planet. While Saturn and Venus both want society to work seamlessly, Saturn is more concerned with impersonal, karmic law, while Venus cares about how justice effects individuals. We can say “he got his” but to his family, this can bring sorrow and pain. This shows how justice operates on a cultural, symbolic level, and also on a personal level.
Yet, as Saturn-Mars AND Uranus-Jupiter square Pluto (even Venus joins next weekend), this is a time when we feel our best efforts only make things worse. The more we do for others, the more harm they seem to do against us. If you give, that means you’re a “people pleaser” and deserve what you get. The more you give, the more ammo you give others to find faults and reasons to turn against you.
Yet, this attitude is our shadow speaking. But right now, the shadow seems to be right. It’s not rational; reason is by-passed when archetypes are contacted. If you find yourself acting out of righteousness, you may want to check your shadow for leaks.
How can we all stop judging and hating each other and start working towards creating a positive change? How can we turn comparisons and competition into healing and encouragement??? What does hating and sending bad energy really accomplish, besides that it’s black magic and harms the sender? How can we use our power and energy productively?
Here are some explanations for the Mars aspects perfecting this weekend and early next week.
This is Mars conjunct Saturn from The Advanced Forecast:
July 31, 2010 10 AM (July 29, 2010 to Aug 2, 2010)
This is a time to rely only on yourself and your own resources, gather in your scattered forces, and concentrate on your own work. You may meet numerous obstructions and delays so that you don’t accomplish as much or work as quickly as you would like. You can, however, do a very thorough job and also tackle the kind of difficult or disagreeable tasks you usually avoid. You are prone to feel frustrated and to resent the limitations or drudgery of this time period. Perseverance and patient effort are required of you now. Try to avoid becoming discouraged or lashing out at the ones you are responsible for.
This is Mars conjunct Saturn from Io Transit Forecast:
Transit MARS conjoined natal Saturn
Jul 30 through Aug 3, exact on Jul 31
This is a tricky period in which you may be required to hurry, but obstacles in your path keep slowing you down. The most maddening prospect is that the obstacles you keep encountering are likely to be ones you bring on yourself. But that is the negative potential. The positive side of the picture is that your energy will focus on becoming more structured and organized. Under this influence, you may be more willing to carefully plan things, and to give greater credence to wisdom and experience before you act or allow others to act. It may be difficult for you to accept the authority or rules imposed on you– but then, you may not encounter such problems since your tendency for more careful actions these days may keep you from running afoul of others. Dental work or minor surgery may be necessary. Wear clothing appropriate for the weather since there is also increased potential for you to suffer from cold, flu, dermatitis, arthritis and other chronic illness.
This is Mars squares Pluto from The Advanced Forecast:
Aug 4, 2010 at 1 AM (Aug 2, 2010 to Aug 5, 2010)
Your drive for personal power, achievement, or control over your life is very strong at this time. The tyrant in you emerges, and you can be excessively willful, domineering, or compulsive about doing what you want to. You battle anyone or anything that is an obstacle to your individual freedom of action, and ego conflicts or a furious power struggle may ensue. Also, you can be unmerciful with yourself and your own weaknesses. You are likely to push yourself much too hard.
This is Mars squares Pluto from The Starlight Solutions Forecast:
Aug 4, 2010 at 1 AM (Aug 2, 2010 to Aug 5, 2010)
A hidden or mostly unconscious need to control or gain power is at play within and around you now. If you violate others’ rights or territory in pursuit of your own agenda, a battle of wills (subtle or overt) is likely. There is a destructive element operating as well, which can be turned to good ends in that you can work to “destroy” or eliminate something, or completely purge or overhaul something in your life. You tend to drive yourself quite hard, so beware of over-straining or forcing yourself past your limits.
This is Mars opposes Jupiter from The Advanced Forecast:
Aug 4, 2010 at 2 AM (Aug 2, 2010 to Aug 5, 2010)
Your energy level and your self-confidence are high now. You are full of enterprise and may chafe at the bit if you can not do enough, if your present position doesn’t give you enough scope, or if your superiors do not allow you to take initiative and advance as you want to. Also, at this time you tend to overextend yourself or to believe you can do more than you actually can.
The most interesting thing about astrology is how it can explain underlying causes of what’s happening. We think of astrology as a prediction tool, yet if we really have free will (or the ability to consciously make choices and decisions), then a clear explanation of the root causes of a situation can help us make better choices, creating a different, more positive outcome. When we look at our personal chart’s transits and progressions, we can see potential solutions and the times to best implement them.
More about YODS
The coming weekend of oppositions — Full Moon AND Saturn-Uranus opposition– creates a rectangle whose ends trine and sextile each other. This is called a MYSTIC RECTANGLE. I included a Full Moon chart, just showing the Mystic Rectangle, in the post on this week’s astrology, July 19 – 25. In that post I mentioned the YOD to Neptune and Chiron (from Mars-Saturn on one side, and from the Sun on the other as it leaves Cancer and enters Leo). Yet this aspects gives focus to all the other transiting aspects. This YOD represents pinpointed energy going to Neptune and Chiron. Regardless of our beliefs, we all quest for meaning, or face a meaningless existence. We are looking for the “right way.”
Neptune is the planet of direct spiritual, religious experience. It’s direct because it needs no middleman. It’s considered confusing because Neptune can give us a direct experience of something that is beyond the world we can touch. Yet, Neptune represents the sea, the collective unconscious, the source of all life, the divine. Yet, instead of embracing the energy of the divine, we run from it, as it threatens to overwhelm us with emotion.
Yet, the less respect we give the unconscious, the more overwhelming it becomes. Approaching the unconscious with an attitude that it is beneath you or just plain silly will reflect that kind of flippant attitude back to you– and that evasion can result in missing a MAJOR clue!
Yet, there is YOD to Neptune during a Full Moon, along with the fifth and final opposition of Saturn and Uranus.
If you have a YOD in your natal chart, you may already feel a sense of destiny about your life. You may not feel you really have a choice in what you do or how much you do it– regardless of the results. You may feel like you walk a thin razor point line between sanity and insanity. And this YOD to Neptune and Chiron shows a profound moment of destiny, a collective contact with the “numinous”, the spiritual, or the divine that lies beyond (surrounding?) the world of reason.
So how does this affect effect us? If you have a strong ego, you can bend with the creative flow of the unconscious. If you think you have a strong ego because you are always 100% correct and think of yourself as the source of all knowledge, your ego may be a lot more fragile than you realize. And this YOD can find you going through what feels like madness. Sure, you can easily pawn it off on someone else who you can point the finger at as insane or stupid, or whatever shows they are far beneath you. Yet, there that only diffuses and confuses. It may not seem significant, yet believing only in the power of your ego can throw your life off course. Like the teeny iceberg that is really vast below the surface, what flows through the unconscious can take down the most powerful. Like the ocean it represents, Neptune exposes a lifeforce that goes beyond our individual awareness. We sense a presence that really is beyond our individual control, we see it in our dreams, and that if we have respect for that force, we can swim WITH it instead of fighting it everywhere and in everyone.
We just may be at a deciding moment.
There are those among us who are called on to do more. There is a fine line between madness and genius. When you are possessed by genius, you have a way to bring what you discover back to civilization. Not everyone has this option, or exercises it. And of those who do bring back it’s images and messages, many are overtaken by their talent. Most of us don’t want to see what’s beyond the veil of existence, it’s just too overwhelming. It really can carry us into greater confusion and even madness, throwing us between the opposites of “alienation and inflation, courage and cowardice, strength and weakness, black and white, good and evil, the bounded land and the boundless sea, height and depth, the universal and the particular, Christian and pagan, primitive and civilized, the outer world and the inner soul, spirit and matter, destiny and free will, love and hate, calm and turbulence, delight and woe, orthodox and heretic, reason and madness, God and man.” [1]
[1] [Edward F. Edinger, pg 24, "Melville's Moby Dick, a Jungian Commentary" ©1975, A New Directions Book, and thanks to the NYPL]
In “Melville’s Mody-Dick: A Jungian Commentary,” Edward F. Edinger perfectly describes a YOD formation when he says: “The word of the Lord is an inner imperative call from the Self to fulfill one’s vocation. …. To be a fugitive of God means psychologically that one is attempting to avoid the demands of his own development and destiny. Such demands stem from the Self–the non-ego center of the psyche– and carry a transcendent or Godlike imperative. When crucial inner development is involved, there can be no freedom of choice, one must choose the necessary and inevitable; failure to choose amounts to a regression, with perhaps fatal psychic consequences.” [pg 38]
Yet, this YOD to Neptune, planet of the collective unconscious, gives us hints and suggestions on how to reconcile oppositions. It can offer acceptance of our inner world and show us how to navigate its deep waters. It can answer our needs and prayers for inner meaning, providing us with sanctuary and peace within. Yet, we can’t stay in our own inner world and expect to make friends and influence people! That would lead to distortion of our inner Self, and more isolation from society because there may be “bad” or insensitive people out there. This is a call to our emotions. To be responsible for how we use our emotions– we can use vulnerability as a tool for manipulation, or as a tool for growth. It can take time and practice, but the timing of this YOD is a call to examine our expectations and disappointments as products of our own beliefs and attitudes. If you choose it, this could be the time you start to truly merge with the all-in-all. One love!

Hell makes a comeback (hopefully not in your backyard:)
Mars opposes Neptune during a period of intense transits that will not stop!!!! Not this month.
What does that mean?
Mars opposes Neptune is a spell.
As Mars opposes Neptune under the current climate, the accusations can fly! Your disillusionment with others is all about the parts of yourself that you cannot tolerate– the imperfections and flaws. It’s unconscious. Yet, projecting your unconscious onto others can add to your confusion and drain your energy. Yet, to make what is UNconscious into something conscious, we need to project. We do that in our major relationships. We do it with therapists. We do it with politicians or pundits. We project our “shadow”. It’s not ours!!! It’s that other idiot’s!!! And the more we disown, the more dangerous the shadow becomes.
Ready for a dip in the psychic pool!?
“Playing” with the spiritual realm, pretending it’s “nothing much”, trivializing the inner world, is usually done by those who do not have a healthy respect for the powers they are stirring up. If you remember the Sorcerers Apprentice in Fantasia, playing lightly with power can go wrong. Simple as it seems, mastery takes commitment and work. To enter the inner realm in a way that is respectful and goes beyond entertainment or profit, we need to make a commitment; and that means doing the self-reflective inner work it takes to integrate what has been split off and blamed, or projected, onto others. As Mars opposes Neptune, we may see our shadows. Scary? Sure, but less scary than continuing to blame whoever you think is “in the wrong” and remaining under the spell that holds you. Being “under a spell” just means you are facing unseen, unconscious powers that you do not fully understand and so cannot own and integrate– or control. There is a choice in this confusion: become more conscious or continue to cast “spells”.
Spell Spill
As the oil spill rages and flows, all summer the experts and astrological aspects suggest…, the Mars-Neptune opposition reminds us that we all need to become more aware of how we send curses and “spells”. How do you send energy? Do you send good wishes, or hope for the worst for others? Do you take whatever you can “get” because, duh, you need it, or are you willing to do the work? You are only susceptible to spells if YOU are under a spell! We grab at answers and things out of fear, but we never really “get over” this way because we are not whole. Dipping into subjects like astrology for crisis management and abundant profits can actually be dangerous because we do not really understand the powers we are calling on. No blame for wherever we are in this life, whatever we chose to believe or not. Yet, some ways of thinking and behaving are more true to your inner self, and others are more of an easy lie. When we see symbols as self-congratulatory, we can be fairly certain this is not the real message. For thoughts to become conscious, we have to retrieve them from the unconscious. This takes patience and guidance, and above all, a commitment to following your path. Again, no blame in lying to yourself. Most of us simply do not have the tools or information to do anything else. Some of us lack the courage. And sometimes, we’re just not ready to achieve balance. We are part of a long tradition of history and beliefs. And the threat of community shame is too great to admit anything “bad” about ourselves. So we pretend we are perfect and the “fault” is in others; or our dang aspects. We neglect to take into account parts of ourselves; we laugh it off as trivial; we disown and shame; we hate and blame; we curse. And we lose the treasures within.
Besides sending spells, Mars-Neptune also represents poisoning, a way of secretly undermining creative energy by those who prefer to avoid direct confrontation. We poison the enthusiasm of others when we belittle and downgrade their genuine efforts. When we say things like, “you’re just doing it for the money,” we undermine the free flow of creative energy. We mix poison with friendship, and we poison our own possibilities, along with our friends’ hopes and hard work.
Since this is Mars-Neptune, we can send energy very subtly. Just a word or hint can send a negative or discouraging message. This is an opportunity to observe our shadow-self in action, however subtle it may be.
As Mars represents the ego and Neptune the mysteries or unconscious realm, we can feel the power and energy that comes from our unconscious inner self. We may find that no matter how much we WILL our mind to do something, we come up against a mysterious force. This is our inner self, our archetypal experiences. The ego only thinks it is in control. Yet, there are more powerful forces than the will of one individual, no matter how powerful or focused we are. As Mars and Neptune oppose, we get to see just the great divide between ego and the unconscious. Yet, it is our task to integrate the 2 so we can use our energy positively and creatively, without sinking into despair or confusion.
Next up: Eclipse season with Saturn-Uranus/Jupiter opposing square Pluto.
Enjoy your day;-)
