The SolarReturn Chart

Astrologers use a number of techniquesfor forecasting, primarily Transits, Progressions and Returns, particularly theSolar Return. This is the first report writer to provide a detailedinterpretation of the Solar Return chart, both as an independent chart and inrelationship to the natal chart. For those who are interested in technicaldetails, the program provides a list of the planets' positions in the natalchart and the Solar Return chart.

Solar Return charts are calculated forthe place where you are on your birthday. Check the Solar Return data on thelower right hand portion of this page to see that the location and date arecorrect. Please note that the Sun may return to its birth position the daybefore or after your actual date of birth. Therefore, a difference of one dayis not uncommon. You can see the position of the Sun, is the same for both thenatal chart and the Solar Return chart.

The Solar Return Chart
by Ray Merriman

Welcome to your Solar Return! Theinterpretations given herein apply to your year ahead, based upon theprinciples outlined in The Solar Return Book of Prediction by Raymond A. Merriman (Seek-ItPublications, 1977, West Bloomfield, MI). In addition, there is a great deal ofnew material added just for this custom program!

TheImportance of the Solar Return Moment
"Being There on Time"

The exact time of one's solar return is asacred annual event for each individual. It happens at only one specific momenteach year. It is at that moment - and only that moment - in which the Earth/Sunrelationship is exactly the same as when you were born. Such a momentconstitutes an "event", and as with all events, this one too is thebasis for a horoscope of import.

However the importance of this horoscopeis unique only to the individual to whom it applies. The quality of that"moment" (i.e. the time of one's solar return) becomes the"seed" of that annual cycle. It is the basis for a horoscope that willdescribe the astrological factors in effect for that one-year cycle. A"moment" of such importance favors a certain mind-set of theindividual as it occurs. This is especially true if one accepts the premisethat thought creates (or influences) reality. If every moment of time has itsown unique quality, then one would want the "quality" of the solarreturn "moment" to be special in a favorable way, especially since itbecomes the horoscope for the year in that person's life.

Given this premise, the individual isencouraged to enter the solar return moment with a sense of reverence. Theindividual is encouraged to put some thought and effort into assuring that thismoment is somehow empowered, infused, with an energy or thoughts consistentwith what that individual would want to experience in the coming year.

What should one do at this moment? Thatof course is up to each individual (you). Obviously it would not be a favorableomen if you engaged in an argument, or sat home brooding, or went to work in anatmosphere of frustration or boredom. Such experiences at the time of yoursolar return would likely set the foundation for your mind-set for the entireyear - and it would be negative.

The following ideas are intended only assuggestions. They take into account the premise that your solar return is themost personally sacred of all days of the year for you. Therefore, going intothe moment of a solar return, you are advised to plan something special, something ideally that would "empower" that moment for you. A ritualof some sort might be a good idea.

For instance, you might take into accountyour location-to-be at that moment. Choose some place special, some place inwhich you are comfortable, happy, and in harmony with. Perhaps it is near alake, ocean, river, or mountain. Perhaps it is on a beach or in a forest. Orperhaps it is in a favorite room.

Set the "stage". Perhaps youwish to have a candle burning, and/or music playing. Perhaps the direction youare facing (North, East, West or South - facing the Sun, or the Moon) hasspecial meaning to you. Perhaps there are artifacts (i.e. pets, jewelry, stones) that have personal meaning, and you wish to display them in your"circle." Perhaps there is a special person whom you have decided toshare this moment with.

The setting (if effected) should becompletely set at least ten minutes prior to the solar return moment. As youenter the 10 minute time band leading into the solar return moment, you mayconsider beginning a meditation. How one meditates is completelyindividualistic. Perhaps you prefer to just enter a very relaxed state. Perhapsyou like to chant. Perhaps you use visualization or affirmation exercises. Ifthe latter, then after achieving a state of relaxation, you might visualize theareas of interest coming up in the next year. In this visualization exercise, you might try to see yourself happy and successful in each situation.

This meditation should last into - andslightly beyond - the solar return moment. Once the moment has passed, and themeditation is complete, you are encouraged to give thanks. This may done in aprayer, or whatever form is sacred to you. In this way, you bring a gentleclosure to the sacred moment which has just passed, a moment which has nowbecome the foundation for the one-year cycle about to begin.

You cannot be late for this moment.Otherwise, you might be symbolically late throughout the entire year. Do nottake this moment in time lightly. Otherwise, all of your affairs may besymbolically taken lightly all year. The solar return is best viewed in thespirit of a pilgrimage, or a mission. It is the most important"holiday" of the year to you. It is the one time during the year thatyou are "connected" to the Infinite through the special relationshipof the Earth and Sun. It is a moment when you are potentially in tune with yourdestiny, which is signified by the Earth/Sun relationship. The Sun is what youare becoming (the future, your growth potential). The Earth is where you haveincarnated (present, your being). Give it the reverence it is due.

General Overview for the Year

At the time of your solar return, planetsare positioned throughout the sky in a system known as "houses."Houses are simply a 12-fold division of the sky as seen from the location ofyour solar return.

These 12 houses are furthermore dividedinto three types: angular, succedent, and cadent houses. Each of these typeshave certain general meanings. The more planets you have in a certain type ofhouse, the more it points to a certain type of year about to unfold. The characterof the year will be shaped greatly by which house types have the most - and theleast - number of planets.

In this calculation, both your natal andthe solar return planets are used, as they fall within your solar returnhoroscope.

The majority of your natal and solarreturn planets fall in:

Cadent Houses: Your solar return chart shows amajority of planets in the cadent houses. This suggests a year of flux as faras your affairs in the world are concerned. This is moreso the case if you alsohave Mutable signs on any angles in this chart. It may also indicate a year ofmental activity and preparation for something in your future (beyond thecurrent year). You may end up viewing this as a year of "training,"apprenticeship, or some sort of preparation for another phase soon to appear inyour life. Many of your plans will likely change, and you might not feel somuch in control as usual, but if you are adaptable (and conditions will be such that this is advised), then manyfavorable alternatives to your current approach to life will arise. If, on theother hand, you are not adaptable, then this situation generally indicates ayear of irritation and frustration, for all significant affairs which you enterinto seem to be with others who are uncooperative, or with unstable situationsover which the you have little control. Unless you wish to work on specialmental projects, a majority of planets posited in the solar return cadenthouses is not the most favorable condition. All cadent houses are the twelfthhouse of the angular house which follows. Hence an overriding majority ofplanets here can suggest the undoing of your former and current efforts (shownby angular houses). With this set-up (unless there is some sort of balanceshown elsewhere, or else a writing project is contemplated), you mightseriously consider traveling elsewhere for your solar return event, somewherethat will move the majority of planets out of the cadent houses, and perhapsinto angular houses (i.e. eastward). It is best to consult with a trained andqualified professional Astrologer for assistance in this matter. It is alsoadvisable to make time available for meditation or daily contemplation duringthis year if you decide to keep this chart, i.e. not travel elsewhere for your birthday.

At best, the majority of planets in yourcadent houses favors writing, teaching, and traveling ventures. It couldindicate favorable legal matters, depending upon which planets are in or ruleyour ninth house. It may also indicate many experiences of inspiration, andeven moments of a joyful outpouring of bliss (compassion) for others. It couldbe a time of great spiritual awareness. At worst, it suggests you have a greatdesire for change, but no real change is effected. It is thus a potentially restlessperiod in which your direction in life is not very clear. It may also correlateto illness, possibly induced by psychological stress. You are advised to watch your diet carefully, andstay with an exercise program.

The House Containing the Sun

The Sun is definitely the most importantplanet (star) to consider in the interpretation of solar returns, for the wholechart is based upon its principle. It is the only placement which is alwaysidentical (by longitude) in the natal as well as the solar return chart. Itshouse position shows where the greatest growth may take place during the yearand where one may express the self creatively. It also denotes the area ofgreatest recognition as well as the area where the individual will"identify" the self this year. It is an indication of successaccording to house placement -- an area where the person may "shine"and show honor, a place where the individual may take pride in his or heraccomplishments.

The houses have basically the sameprinciples in the interpretation of a solar return chart as they do in a natalchart. The only difference is that the solar return houses are temporal innature, and thus the actual interpretation of their meaning will be slightlymodified because of this factor.

The Sun, at the time ofyour solar return, falls in the 12th house.

12th house: During this year, you may identifyyourself closely with efforts behind the scene, or out of the public's eye. Theyear favors charity and volunteer work. It may also favor rest, relaxation andseclusion, as it may signify a withdrawing phase of your life. It may bebeneficial for work with institutions, or even psychic development andmeditative pursuits. It favors research and doing activities by oneself, andout of the limelight.

However you may experience feelings ofvague apprehension and self-doubt. If planets herein are not favorable byaspect and you fail to utilize proper care, then it may mean hospitalization, imprisonment or confinement of some kind. This is not the most desirable houseto find a majority of solar return planets, or the Sun, unless the favorablegoals listed above are of great value to you at the moment. You are advised totravel for your solar return. Consult a well-trained and qualified professionalastrologer to assist.

Cusp Conjunctions of Solar Return or Natal Planets

An area of life is highly emphasized forthe year of the solar return if a solar return or natal planet conjuncts anyhouse cusp. The orb of the conjunction is approximately 3 degrees, 45 minutes, either side of the house cusp. The house system preferred (default) by theauthor is Placidus, Tropical method.

The planet making the conjunctiondescribes the nature of activities - events, conditions - that tend to unfoldin the coming year. This planet's nature is highlighted as being prominent forthis year.

In your solar return chart, you have thefollowing planets conjunct a house cusp:

These are areas where you may initiate apioneering spirit and eagerness to try new things, and if favorably placed andaspected, then success is very possible; if afflicted, then you must guardagainst an over-impulsive nature which could lead to failure of pursuits. Thisis an area of great motivation and activity -- an arena of "action."It also denotes where you tend to be competitive, or meet with competition fromothers. Furthermore, this shows where you are likely to experience discordancewith others, and possibly engage in quarrels or disputes. Perceiving Reality and Relationships:
Planets in Aspect to the Solar Return Horizon

Since the time and location of the solarreturn set up a structure (astrologically) for which an experience will occurthat the individual will relate to, the foundation of that structure becomesextremely significant. This structural foundation is symbolized by the anglesof the horoscope, the axes of the Earth, in which all the zodiac and all of theplanets combine within. The relationship of these axes (angles) to the planets-- both natal and solar return planets-- give special meaning to the structureof experience the native will undergo during the period of the solar return'sinfluence (one year).

A planet (solar return and natal) in closeaspect to the solar return horizon (Ascendant-Descendant) -- orb no more thansix degrees -- affects the nature of how one perceives reality, how oneprojects the self, what one considers important in dealing with others, and thebehavior and activities which one expresses in the world during the year. Italso describes how one tends to handle situations as they arise during theyear.

The following represents a briefdescription of the planets (solar return and natal) in close aspect to theAscendant/ Descendant axis in the solar return wheel (plus means trine, sextileand conjunction aspects; minus means square and sometimes conjunction aspects):

Return Mercury Conjunction Ascendant (Orb: 508')

Mercury in harmonious aspect to horizon:This year is favorable for communications of all kinds: writings, speeches, business transactions, negotiations, sales, and reading. The mind is highlyalert and active, and very ripe for new learning - whether intellectually or interms of learning a new skill. It is also favorable for teaching a skill toothers. You are encouraged to make deals with others, as everyone (especiallyyou) tends to benefit. It is also favorable for working with young people, doing any kind of detailed or analytical projects, and purchasing a newcomputer, computer products, or automobile. You tend to exhibit excellentorganizational skills.

Return Venus Sextile Ascendant (Orb: 331')

Venus in harmonious aspect to horizon:This a year in which agreements and relationships of a very positive nature mayunfold. In business, agreements lead to financial success. Many new andfavorable contacts and contracts may arise, and you are encouraged to pursuethese. Others seem to find you most agreeable and pleasant to be with. For the year, you exude more than your usual grace and charm. Romantic matters also arehighlighted. You have a wonderful and appealing nature which draws others toyou. In addition, your personal appearance is very attractive - even you likethe way you look! Furthermore, others whom you find exciting and attractivecome into your life, and from this, love may transpire. Things of beauty andvalue may also come into your possession. Financially, you tend to do very wellthis year, and your savings may increase, thus affording you a greater sense offinancial and psychological security. You are encouraged to purchase thingsthat will make you feel "good" about yourself, or to change yourappearance in some way if you wish (i.e. clothing, plastic surgery, etc.). You mayalso function very well as a mediator between two opposing views, and receivecompliments from both sides. If the aspect to the Ascendant is not exact, youmay wish to consult with a qualified professional astrologer who can advise youon where this aspect would be more exact. The closer this aspect is to exact, the more powerful its correlation to your life experience is likely to be.

Return Mars Conjunction Ascendant (Orb: 038')

Mars Conjunction Ascendant is bothharmonious and discordant.

Mars in harmonious aspect to horizon:This is a year of great motivation to do things successfully. You seem highlycharged and energetic, and very self-directed. Your pioneering spirit can be agreat aid in starting a particular (or many) new ventures. You seem eager totry new things. One area that may be of great benefit is physical exercise orathletic competition - or competition of any kind this year. You tend to farevery well in such endeavors. This indicates a year of great activity, and onenot given to boredom.

Mars in discordant aspect to horizon:This year seems to have more than the normal amount of disputes and quarrels.Numerous battles with partners and close relations - personal and work - seemto occur. It is also a year of impetuous and perhaps immature behavior, onegiven towards temper tantrums. This is not favorable for relationships, and assuch, close relations may be jeopardized because of your constant upset. Inaddition, you may have a tendency to act rashly and without thinking properly first.Such qualities may make you prone to mistakes or accidents. It may be wise tolearn to count to ten before responding out of anger. It may also be wise tocheck over your work before putting it into effect. Try not to compete withothers, but rather try to find value in who they are and what they are doing.Try to reach out and help others, instead of expecting them to get out of yourway. If not, they may do just that - get out of your way, and out of your life.

Since this aspect tends to coincide withpotentially difficult circumstances, it may be wise to consider travelingelsewhere for your solar return, a place where this angular relationship wouldbe removed altogether. If you are open to this possibility, consult a qualifiedprofessional astrologer for assistance.

Natal Neptune Sextile Ascendant (Orb: 045')

Neptune in harmonious aspect to horizon:This year favors romantic travels and/or experiences. It is like living adream. Travels to tropical islands - either literally or in your dreams - areprominent. The dream state is very active, which may be very good forimaginative efforts like advertising, writing, music and dance. It also favorspassive, pleasurable and aesthetic activities like meditation, spiritualpursuits, movies, reading, and plays. Acting and sailing (or cruising) venturesare also favorable this year, as may be pursuits into psychic development. Inthe role of a counselor, you may develop and express great skills. You have theability to truly help others through difficult times, and they are verygrateful. If you can express compassion, you will likely feel a wonderful glowof love this year from others.

Natal Pluto Conjunction Ascendant (Orb: 354')

Pluto Conjunction Ascendant is bothharmonious and discordant.

Pluto in harmonious aspect to horizon:This is a year in which you might feel and express tremendous power andinfluence over others. You have the ability to positively affect the lives ofothers, to help them (and yourself) make a successful transformation at a crisispoint in life. You are like a psychologist or detective. This is a year ofgreat insight and discovery. It favors research and intense study. What youfind could be powerfully illuminating. It is a favorable year for getting ridof things that are no longer relevant to your life, and for terminatingrelationships that have been detrimental. It may be favorable for entering intonew financial partnerships, or collecting debts owed to you by others. In groupsettings you tend to wield much influence, and be an agent of constructivereform, reflecting the values of the larger group who this group supposedlyrepresents.

Pluto in discordant aspect to horizon:This is a year of threats. There may be a threat to one's very existence, as ina health crisis, or a dangerous situation. There may be a threat to one'sposition in a group, or in the community, as someone may try to undermine yourinfluence or efforts. Be wary of those who might sabotage. Usually theirmotives are power or greed. You yourself must be careful of coming across toocoercive and intimidating, or dealing with others who are. You may findyourself dealing with rejection, or forced into a position you did not seek.

Since this aspect tends to coincide withpotentially difficult circumstances, it may be wise to consider travelingelsewhere for your solar return, a place where this angular relationship wouldbe removed altogether. If you are open to this possibility, consult a qualifiedprofessional astrologer for assistance.

The Significance of Vocation and Family:
Planets in Aspect to the Solar Return Meridian

A planet in close aspect to the meridian-- Midheaven and I.C. axis -- describes influences upon your vocation and homeor family matters. It may also describe your spiritual impetus in the comingyear and sense of purpose.

You have the following planets in closeaspect to your solar return meridian this year.

Return Moon Sextile Midheaven (Orb: 052')

Moon in harmonious aspect to meridian:Your work may feel like a family, and your family may be very supportive ofyour work this year. Both family members and work associates care a great dealabout you. You are truly blessed this year with love. Any matters dealing withreal estate or relocation seem to go very smoothly. If there are changes professionally, they also seem to coincide with favorable changes in income.

Return Mercury Square Midheaven (Orb: 624')

Mercury in discordant aspect to meridian:Numerous deals and/or agreements seem to go awry this year. Misunderstandingsseem to undermine your business and family efforts, and it is necessary to stayclear and current with others. There may be difficulties with co-workers whoseem uncooperative.

Natal Venus Trine Midheaven (Orb: 340')

Venus in harmonious aspect to meridian:This year favors financial gains and income opportunities. Many new andfavorable contacts may be made in your profession, so you are encouraged todevelop relationships which you think have possibilities leading to professionalor financial growth. There is much support for your ideas and talents. In thecontext of a group, or teamwork setting, you are the crux of much harmony, displaying an uncanny ability to resolve conflicts so the goals of the groupcan be met smoothly. In fact, you seem to have the ability to turn opponentsinto allies, to make an apparent negative into a positive. Support comes fromthe home front as well. There is much love and sharing possible within yourfamily structure. If you wish to purchase or sell a home this year, you mayrealize great value or profit. Romantic liaisons are also possible and it maysignify a year of entering into marriage or business partnerships and/oragreements. This is a very favorable set up, and if the aspect is not exact(within 1 degree), you may wish to travel a short distance (i.e. probably lessthan 300 miles) to bring it closer to being exact. The more exact thisplanetary  aspect is to themeridian, the more powerful this planet's nature is likely to be in your lifethis year. Consult a qualified professional astrologer for assistance in thismatter if you are open to it.

Natal Jupiter Conjunct Nadir (Orb: 701')

Jupiter in harmonious aspect to meridian:A great deal of success and growth are possible in your work and home settingthis year. Opportunities abound. There is great joy and happiness possible.Along with this comes the possibility of a large bonus or increase in income. If you are in business for yourself, then sales probably increase greatly as anumber of new accounts and contacts are developed. There is no need to goanywhere else for your solar return, as this setup is one of the most favorablepossible. It is also possible that there is cause to celebrate in your family.Perhaps it coincides with the birth of a child, grandchild, or a marriage -either yours or someone close to you in the family. Unions of many kinds arepossible, and they all look favorable. This is a very favorable set up, and ifthe aspect is not exact (within 1 degree), you may wish to travel a shortdistance (i.e. probably less than 300 miles) to bring it closer to being exact. The more exact this planetary aspect is to the meridian, the more powerful this planet's nature is likelyto be in your life this year. Consult a qualified professional astrologer forassistance in this matter if you are open to it.

Natal Saturn Square Midheaven (Orb: 121')

Return Saturn Square Midheaven (Orb: 845')

Saturn in discordant aspect to meridian:This year may seem like a struggle. Tasks are difficult to complete, eitherbecause you lack motivation to finish, or because of a series of obstaclesarising which cause delays. Some of these obstacles may be in the form of otherpeople - people who may be critical in their judgment of your efforts, orpeople who are in a position to delay the results or rewards of your efforts.Patience is necessary, as well as the realization that the more time it takessomeone to accept your ideas, the more time you have to either perfect yourefforts further, or to work on other projects. There is a danger, however, thatyour efforts will be rejected in total, or in part. Perhaps you should becertain that you are not in danger of wasting your time before you begin suchprojects, i.e. get a contract to do the job before doing it. The worstpossibility is that someone asks you to do it over again in a different way, orto modify it somehow, in a manner that requires as much work as you havealready done. In addition to these things at work, there is also a possibilityof a setback in the home or with a family member. This may not be a favorableyear for relocation, building a home, or taking on a new job (unless yourcurrent position is just too frustrating). This set up portends some difficultconditions during the year. It may be wise to consider traveling elsewhere foryour solar return in order to remove this planetary aspect to your meridian. Ifyou are open to this idea, you are advised to consult with a qualifiedprofessional astrologer for assistance.

Return Pluto Trine Midheaven (Orb: 452')

Being in the Flow:
Solar Return Planets Related to their Natal Positions

Some years we feel totally in synch withcertain aspects of our nature, and some years we feel completely out of synch.Such periods may show in the relationship of your solar return planets to thenatal planets of the same type. Although specific aspects between the two(solar return and natal planet of same type) are most powerful, a simpleanalysis of gender can be quite revealing. Generally speaking, if the solarreturn planet is in the same sign as your natal counter-point, you tend to bevery much in synch with that planetary principle. If they are even in the samegender (Earth-Water are Yin, or Feminine, while Fire-Air are Yang, or Masculine),there is the sense of being compatible and in synch with this planetaryprinciple. However, when the planet of the same type are in different genders, and especially if square or semi-square to one another, we may feel awkward andout of synch with that principle.

We will now examine the genderrelationships between the solar return and natal planets of the same type, andsee the areas in which you feel in synch with your natural rhythms, and whichareas you may feel out of synch with those rhythms. In those cases where thetwo actually make an aspect to each other that aspect is listed. Sextiles andTrines tend to be favorable, as do most conjunctions. The squares andoppositions may be more discordant, although the opposition benefits by beingin the same gender in most cases.

Moon to Moon, Same Gender: During this year you will tend to feelfulfillment of your emotional needs. You will likely have satisfying emotionalexperiences, i.e. love; meeting with others who appreciate your mannerisms, traits, or habits; social popularity, and even favorable public recognition;domestic security; happiness in moods; enjoyable experiences in eating andnight life entertainment; favorable conditions resulting from past endeavors;meeting of others with similar needs who can be helpful now.

Mercury to Mercury, Same Gender: This may be a very busy year, with manydecisions having to be made. Mentally, you are very sharp. You tend tocommunicate ideas very effectively, getting your ideas across to others quiteadeptly. You may be very persuasive, and hard to disagree with. If you areinclined towards business, then it may be a year of much activity and severaltransactions. If you are inclined towards travel, especially short journeys, then there may be much travel - perhaps business-related. It is a favorableyear for reading, learning, teaching, and in general, getting your ideas acrossto others, or being stimulated by compatible ideas from others.

Venus to Venus, Same Gender: Compatibility with others whom you loveand care deeply for is highlighted this year. You may feel in a romantic moodfor much of this year. Socially you may enjoy great popularity, as you meetpeople who have similar likes and dislikes. There is a sense of inner harmonyand peace. There is consistency with your psychological values, as you are insynch here. You have ample opportunity to share beautiful experiences withothers. This may be a year for acquisitions which you will value greatly, perhaps even receiving gifts and/or praise from others. Financially there maybe gains and you seem on track, according to goals you have set for yourself. This is a year of satisfying desires, especially sensual ones. Furthermore itis a time of being treated with fairness or favoritism by others. Also you seemsatisfied with your appearance and/or style. In fact, there may be favorableexperiences involving your physical appearance (increasing attractiveness i.e.hair style, new clothes etc.).

Mars to Mars, Different Gender: A tendency towards carelessness leadingto accidents and/or disagreements (arguments) may highlight this year. There isa tendency for rashness and bluntness, perhaps causing offense to others. Youare advised to be cautious of jumping into new things without thinkingcarefully (and consequently letting others down as you then jump out just asfast). You may lack foresight, thereby leaving new projects unfinished. Theremay be problems with self-assertiveness, obstacles in the success of newventures -- perhaps even catastrophes of sorts. You may also feelover-stimulated and/or excited. You are advised to think before acting, to usediscretion and care in all projects, especially new ones, and to practicesafety in all of your affairs and activities where danger of accidents is evenremotely possible. It may not be favorable to take an aggressive or competitivestance with others this year, as you are out of synch with your basic physicalinstincts.

Areas of Harmony or Stress:
Aspects to a House Ruler by Planets in its House

A planet in a house, in an aspect(especially major aspect) to the ruler of that same house, will indicate theease or the difficulties to be encountered in those areas of life ruled by thathouse, according to the nature of the aspect. Of course, most of the planets ina particular house do not usually aspect the ruler of that house, but in thosecases where they do, the nature of the aspect will indicate whether matterspertaining to that house will go smoothly and harmoniously (harmonious aspect)or whether they will tend to be obstacle-forming and conflict-orienting intheir nature (affliction aspect). The aspects between these two planets, whenthey occur, take precedence over all other aspects to the planet located in thehouse.

This method applies to a solar returnplanet located in a particular solar return house, in aspect to the rulingplanet of that house. That ruling planet may be either the solar return ornatal planet. In cases where the solar return planet falls in the same solarreturn house as the ruler of that house, this may be treated as a conjunction. The matters of that house are thus considered very significant for the year.

Second house planets in harmonious aspect to rulers:

Financial affairs tend to go very wellthis year. It favors appreciation of income and savings, as well as coming intopossession of valuable goods.

Fifth house planets in harmonious aspect to rulers:

This year indicates excellent relationswith your children. It is generally a very happy and creative year, filled withmany pleasurable experiences in one's social life. It favors romance and play.Entertaining, and going out to see entertainment, is favorable this year. Allin all, it is a marvelous time to enjoy yourself. If you speculate, you mayexperience much success. Socially, you may be very popular.

Seventh house planets in harmonious aspect to rulers:

This year favors excellent partnershipsand marriage. You and your partner(s) may be getting along splendidly. If youhave no partners, then this year you may meet one. It favors entering intoagreements, and forming alliances with people who represent you well. It may bea good year to find a good attorney, if you need one. If you are married, yourpartner tends to do very well, and this strengthens your marriage. It is also ayear favoring popularity and social advancement.

Eighth house planets in harmonious aspect to rulers:

This year presents an opportunity to getout of unhealthy and or unproductive relationships that have been plaguing you.Matters of great difficulty may now be brought to a culmination, andsuccessfully terminated - at least terminated for your good. Matters to do withtaxes, insurance and estate settlements may work in your favor, and from theseyou may receive sizable moneys. If you engage in research efforts, there ismuch of value waiting to be discovered. It is a year of insight. It is also ayear that may highlight exciting and satisfying sexual activity. You may begiven, or have earned, a position of influence and power as well.

Eleventh house planets in harmonious aspect to rulers:

This year may highlight the results ofsuccessful efforts in the past (or present). It is not the effort itself, butthe results or rewards that come from it (i.e. income, new position withgreater authority). It also favors group activities. These group activities arenot only enjoyable, but they add a richness to your life. New friendships maybe formed now, and old ones solidified with new and enriching experiences.

Twelfth house planets in discordant aspect to rulers:

In retrospect, you may look back andwonder if you lost this year. It may have been a year of much promise, butnothing happened. This is moreso perhaps if planets in the twelfth houseafflict the ruler of the Ascendant. The signatures suggest the possibility ofunfavorable dealings with institutions like jails, prisons, hospitals, andother places of confinement. You worst enemy may be the fears inside of yourown mind. One's dreams may be very disturbing, and it wise not to engage inover active fantasies and unrealistic, delusional, thinking.

Significant Time Periods for the Year
Indicated by the Solar Return Chart

The art of predicting events -- orchanges -- and the timing of such by the solar return chart is a three-foldprocess. The first of these, the progressed solar return Moon, will bediscussed initially, whereas transits and the "one degree per day angularprogression" methods will follow.

TimeBands of Significant Change:
The Progressed Solar Return Moon

The following is a listing of the datesin which your progressed solar return Moon makes these exact aspects in thecourse of the next year, and their potential implications in your life at thattime. Please note two things: first, you must allow an orb of six weeks beforeand after each date, as these progressed lunar aspects have a time band inwhich they may be effective. Second, this listing covers the period beginningthree months before your actual solar return date, and 15 months following it.It covers an 18-month time band.

The reason for this is that your lifedoesn't just suddenly change on your birthday. There is a transition phase in whichthe conditions and issues of the last year (as shown in last year's solarreturn) begin to give way to the new conditions and issues denoted by thisyears solar return. According to the principles developed by Raymond A.Merriman in The Solar Return Book of Prediction, this transition phase beginsthree months prior to your birthday, and continues for three months followingyour birthday. That is, three months prior to your solar return (whentransiting Sun squares your natal Sun), you begin to witness the issues andconditions arising that will be relevant during your next birth year.Furthermore, the issues you are working through in any solar return year, willcontinue to be of importance for about three months following your next solarreturn (when the transiting Sun forms the waxing square to your natal Sun). Youdon't just leave those issues at once at the time of your birthday. During thethree months before and after your birthday, there is this transition periodwhere the conditions of the past begin to be resolved (or require less and lessattention), and the new conditions and issues - shown in the new chart -  begin to command increasingly moreattention.

During the 18 months surrounding yoursolar return (3 months before through 15 months following), your progressedsolar return Moon makes the following aspects to your solar return and natalplanets, or their solstice points:

Jul 17, 2004: MoonQuincunx Saturn (Natal)

Within six weeks of this date, you mayhave feelings of frustration, as if you are stuck or blocked in something youare doing. Things may not be moving as quickly or smoothly as you had hoped. There is a tendency for delays, and thoughts of totally giving up on theseprojects may be entertained. Perhaps you are too critical of your efforts.Worse yet, perhaps others are too critical, and that could elicit feelings ofhurt. Be careful of feelings of inadequacy, or incompetency. You may need astrong support group - or person - around you now, to remind you of yourpositive and good qualities. It may be very beneficial for you to reach out andtry to help someone now. This can help resurrect feelings of value andself-worth. It is not to your advantage to spend time with others who arecritical and hard to please; it will only put you into a further spin.Likewise, it is not wise to behave that way yourself: being too critical andhard to please may cause others to avoid contact with you. Feelings ofloneliness, or aloneness, may be prevalent, and to counter-act them, you mightconsider forcing yourself to get out and away from your worries. You may notfeel like socializing, so perhaps going to movies or getting into a good bookthat has morally strong characters could be positive. You yourself may be goingthrough a moral dilemma, but the results could be quite positive, yielding astronger and clearer set of principles for your own conduct and self-respect.This is a reflective time, but try to avoid spending too much time on worry, for it probably doesn't solve anything, and it may make you depressed.

Sep 05, 2004: Moon SquareMercury (Return Solstice Point)

Within six weeks of this date you mayencounter some sort of misunderstanding with another. You may experiencedifficulty in getting your ideas - or intent - understood by others. They toomay feel that you do not understand their position. Adjustments may benecessary, and you may have to act quickly (but not rashly) in order to geteverything back on track. During this period, you are encouraged to makecertain of your facts, and not project blame onto others without checkingthings out first. Business decisions, deals, or activities may go sour, due tomisunderstandings or misinformation. It is possible to salvage something, though, if you adjust quickly to the new reality. Be careful of signing papersor making any agreements now, without thorough analysis and totalunderstanding. Also be careful of others who may try to attribute thoughts toyou that you did not express.

Sep 13, 2004: MoonSesquiquadrate Sun (Natal)

Within six weeks either side of this dateyou may feel very restless and unsettled. It is important to keep your mindfocused and challenged. Matters to do with your work or home life may requireadditional attention now, as changes may be unfolding. You may not haveanticipated these changes, and as such you may be rather moody - or emotional -regarding them. Try to be flexible and open-minded. If you worry too much, youmay exhaust yourself. This could lead to a decline in physical energy, evenillness. If close relationships are going through a troublesome period, try tobe more caring or nurturing. Understand that you too may require the same ofsomeone else, but it is best not to be too dependent. In fact, dependencies maybe the source of the problem: either you - or they - are too dependent upon theother, perhaps causing a sense of "smothering." Changes are probablyhappening, and they may be out of your control, and the best approach may be todevelop a sense of "acceptance", and thereby quickly adapt to them.Otherwise, if you don't accept these changes over which you have no control, you may find yourself frustrated and unhappy, and that sort of whining maycause others to withhold support you need.

Within six weeks of this date, you mayfeel very restless and emotional. Your feelings tend to be easily hurt, and youmay be given to bouts of whining, complaining, anger, or even crying. Closerelationships may be a source of difficulties: perhaps you are too dependentupon them, or feeling suffocated because they are too dependent upon you.Family matters may also be troubling. During this period you are encouraged toexamine your life and determine areas where you can truly be thankful andgrateful. Instead of seeing yourself as a victim, see yourself as someone whois fortunate for the things and relationships in your life that are working outwell. An attitude of appreciation and thankfulness is very possible, and willendear you to others, rather than the alternative, which is to push others awaythrough a quality of over-clinging. It would also be helpful to have a specificand challenging project to focus upon. Otherwise you may be troubled byboredom, restlessness, or too many conflicting and undirected thoughts.

Jan 03, 2005: MoonSesquiquadrate Jupiter (Natal)

Within six weeks of this date, you mayexperience a tendency to exaggerate or over-reach in your activities. You mayfind you have taken on too many things to do. Your judgment - both in othersand in regard to how much you can handle - may not have been accurate. Try notto over-estimate yourself, others, or what you can or cannot do, during thistime band. It is possible that you could feel quite confident - in fact, over-confident.It favors socializing and meeting people, having a good time. However becareful of speaking without thinking, for you could unintentionally insultothers and/or bring embarrassment to yourself. It is a time of indulgence andexcess, of giving into temptation and forsaking discipline. It is therefore notthe best time to make agreements or sign contracts - you may be giving away toomuch. This could result in loss.

If you do notice, then talk to these individuals before they do youharm. Clear things up for them, about you. You are likely to be veryimaginative now, and this could be positive in an artistic sense. However youmay also be given to fantasies and delusional thinking, so before you fullybelieve something, make sure there is a basis in reality for your belief. Youmay be well advised to avoid gossip or talking negatively about others, as itmay come back to haunt you. Your "secrets" are not likely to be heldin confidence, so be careful of what you say and who you talk about. Yourreputation may be on the line, and you may be the subject of false accusationsor deceptions. Try to see things as they are, and check your intuition out withreality during this time.

Specific Dates of Potential Noteworthy Events:
The Progressed Solar Return Angles

One of the most accurate techniques oftiming significant events and changes during the year is by progressing theangles of the solar return chart. The meridian (M.C. and I.C.) is progressedforward through the solar return chart at the same rate as the transiting Sun,or approximately one degree per day. In other words, if the Sun has transited 5signs and 20 degrees from the time of the solar return, you may move the M.C.of the solar return forward 5 signs and 20 minutes to see where it is byprogression. By the same token, you can then look up the correspondingAscendant for that M.C. degree, and that will represent the progressed horizon(Ascendant - Descendant axis) for that same day.

The angles progressing through the solarreturn chart may be likened to transits: they "bring" conditions tothe individual, according to the angle's nature. The planet receiving aspectsby the progressed angle denotes the individual's likely response, orexpression, to the condition. The area of life emphasized is a combination ofthe angle involved (which is also an area of life), and the house whichcontains the planet being aspected, as well as the house which the planet rulesin the solar return chart.

One point needs to be highlighted here:it is primarily the conjunction (or opposition) of the progressed angles to asolar return or natal planet that is important. Although other aspects, likethe square and trine, may coincide with events or conditions described by theangle and the nature of the planet(s) involved, it is primarily the conjunction/oppositionaspect that seems to consistently point out the times of the major events ofthe year to which the return applies.

This technique of progressing the anglesis reliable within a three-day time band, and usually within only one day. Whenused with the other techniques of prediction, like the progressed solar returnMoon and the transits to the solar return chart, these dates can be an amazingindicator of significant events to unfold in your life during this year.

Keeping a Diary of Your Solar Return Experience

Astrology is a language of symbols. It isalso a study of time. At any given point in time, astrological symbolism ispresent which assists in the understanding of that time.

Throughout our life, people come in andsituations arise. On the surface, these people are indeed people, and thesesituations are indeed specific, identifiable conditions. However, these peopleand these situations are also symbolic of lessons in life which each one of usis working on. Our experiences with these people and these conditions afford usan opportunity to understand ourself more fully, to get a grasp on ourpatterns, and possibly to make a conscious effort to break those patterns if weso wish.

In the course of your solar return day,you will come into contact with people and situations, You will experiencecertain conditions that arise in your life. And you will react as well asinteract with these people and circumstances. You will have impressions andmake judgments concerning these events and interactions. In some cases, youwill react favorably, and judge them as positive experiences. In other cases, you may react more critically, and judge them less favorably.

The moments of these experiences andthese interactions with others during the solar return day can be progressedinto the future of this year. Basically the premise is this: whatever youexperience during the solar return day will symbolically represent the natureof your experiences during the solar return year. Furthermore, the time ofthese experiences - whether external or internal - will relate to a specificperiod in the year when that "symbolism" will likely repeat. Theformula is the same as used in the calculation of the solar return Moon. Thatis, every two hours of time from your solar return represents one month of timefrom the date of your solar return. In the same token, approximately every fourminutes of time is the equivalent of one day in the solar return year.

Therefore it can be very enlightening tocarry paper and pen with you on the day of your solar return. Mark down thetime in which things happen during this day. In fact, you may want to keep avery detailed daily record of what happened as it goes along. It is also a goodidea to plan things during the day which you know will be favorable andenjoyable, as that will set the tone of a favorable and enjoyable activitylater on this year.

To briefly illustrate, let us assume yoursolar return occurs at 6:00 PM. At 8:00 PM, the circumstances that youexperience (in the external world, or your interior world) will be symbolic ofwhat is going on in your life about one month after your birthday. If you wentout and had a wonderful dinner with someone you love, then perhaps one monthlater you will find your life very wonderful, almost like being out for awonderful dining experience.

The daily record should begin six hoursbefore your solar return, and continue 30 hours afterwards. The six hoursbefore are symbolic of the three months leading up to your birthday. Even theseevents and circumstances are symbolic of what you have already gone through, and seeing the symbolism helps put the recent past into perspective. The sixhours following the 24 hours of the birthday are also important. They refer tothe momentum of this year carrying into the next solar return, and your abilityto make the successful transition from one year's issues to the next.

Choosing One's Solar Return

One of the most exciting facts aboutsolar returns is that you may actually choose your own horoscope wheel for the year!Your choice is limited, as might be expected, by both certain mundane as wellas astrological factors. From an astrological point, your choice is limited tothe angles and house placement of planets as well as rulerships, which coversquite a bit of territory. Your choice does not consist of what relationship(aspects) the planets will have to each other or to your other natal planets --only their relationship to your solar return angles and houses. From a mundanepoint of view, your choice is limited to your means and willingness to bemobile at the time of your solar return. The angles and houses are directlyrelated to your location at the moment of your solar return; hence, yourfreedom and willingness to travel to specific location will influence just howmuch choice you have in creating your own chosen horoscope for the year. Andanother limitation, of course, is your knowledge and ability to work with solarreturns, for without this knowledge you have absolutely no choice in the matterwhatsoever.

What you can determine, then, are theaxes of the Earth -- the horizon and meridian of the solar return chart. Theactual moment of the solar return will not change -- cannot be changed; but thelocal mean time (LMT) and consequently the True Sidereal Time of the solarreturn can be chosen; hence, the angles and houses -- the "structure ofthe experience" in the forthcoming year -- can also be chosen.

In choosing your solar return chart forany given year, there are two basic questions you might ask: first, "Whatarea of life do I want to highlight (in a positive manner) this year?,"and secondly, "What are my boundaries, or limitations, in traveling at thetime of my solar return?" Obviously if the most astrologically desirableplace to celebrate your solar return is somewhere in China, a combination offinancial, governmental, and time factors may make that choice animpossibility. So you must work within the boundaries of your means, or thosemeans placed upon you by "outside" forces.

In answering the first question, youshould remember some of the basic rules presented earlier. For instance, abalance of planets in the different house types is desirable; a majority ofplanets in angular houses - or at least three personal planets posited there --will indicate a "significant" year; an overabundance of planets incadent houses will tend to indicate the opposite -- a year of changes and/orpreparation for future years.

Locating planets in harmonious aspect toan angle is most desirable, and so too is the positioning of benefics close toa house cusp -- especially in that house which pertains to your areas ofinterest for this year. Another desirable placement is a harmonious aspectbetween a planet in a particular house to the planet that rules that house. Ifyou are able to arrange for a combination of these factors to occur, accordingto the house chosen to be highlighted, then it is a favorable indication thatmatters ruling that area of your life will flow successfully in the comingyear.

There are, of course, some factors thatwill inhibit even the finest of house and angle arrangements. If the aspectsbetween your solar return planets to each other, and even to your natalplanets, are discordant according to the expressions you wish to highlight, there is not much that can be done to "assure" their favorableexpression this year. At best, you can "lessen" their potentialnegative manifestation by traveling somewhere that will position an angle tomake a "soft" (harmonious) aspect to one of the planets involved. Forexample, if there is a T-square in the solar return chart involving planets inhouses that you have determined are important to you in the coming year, youmay wish to travel somewhere at the time of your solar return that will bringthe horizon (Ascendant - Descendant axis) or meridian (Midheaven and I.C. axis)into a favorable aspect (sextile/trine) to the planet and/or house ruler youare concerned about.

It is also possible to more greatlyempower positive aspects between planets in your solar return chart by simplytraveling to a point in which these same angles make yet another positiveaspect to them. For instance, if you have a trine between two planets thatrelate to an area of great personal interest this year, you might consider travelingsomewhere for your birthday that will find the Midheaven or Ascendant forming agrand trine to these planets. That location would greatly enhance theexpression and experience of the two trining planets during the course of theyear.

If you are not an astrologer, and you areinterested in designing a solar return chart that most positively highlightsyour solar return planets, you are advised to consult a well-trained, qualifiedand professional astrologer who can assist you in this matter. This would begreatly suggested in the event that you find certain parts in the "PlanetsIn Aspect To Angles", or "Planets Conjunct The Solar Return HouseCusps" sections particularly troubling. Those conditions can be alteredsimply by traveling for your solar return. In addition, planning a trip on yourbirthday is an excellent idea. It will cause you to put great conscious effortinto that most sacred of all days of the year for you personally - yourbirthday, the day the Sun and Earth return to their exact position of yourbirth moment. It is a special day for you every year. Treat it with reverence.Make its unfoldment an annual pilgrimage, a mission, a challenge for you tohave a super experience. The experiences of that day will be the foundation forthe whole of your next year of life.
